And a column of grackles will lead them….

We live near a staging area for a local common grackle migration. I’m estimating that about a thousand birds, perhaps more, congregate in the trees to the south of our house a couple hours before sunset. Gorgeous loud squeaky birds. Once they’ve done chatting, they fly north, nearly silent except for the occasional flight calls.
I noticed this morning that a similar flight takes place about an hour and a half after sunrise. As in the evening, the grackle column flies from south to north. DH watched a mile-long column zig-zag across WT Harris one day on his way to work. Perhaps the flock I saw this morning connects up with that much larger group on its way to breakfast.
Ours is certainly not the largest staging area I’ve seen, and it’s a tiny local migration flock, but it’s exhilarating to watch anyway.
