Invalidation/Validation

I’ve had a huge time feeling validated throughout my life, but I didn’t have a name for it for many years. I suspect many people have a shortage of validation as well.

So, knowing that I have had a problem feeling validated, I try to be mindful and provide validation to others. It’s challenging sometimes–both on the mindfulness side and on the actual validation side. Sometimes I am too wrapped up in my head so I miss the chance; sometimes the method I choose is inappropriate. Worst of all is when both happen; hindsight makes it all painfully obvious.

I wonder how many connections have been broken over a lack of validation? If someone has a history of feeling invalidated, it’s difficult to ever trust when validation is offered. Is there any way to break this cycle?

And when two people with histories of invalidation dance around each other, is there any way to change the music?
