Winter cold and audio mirror
November 23rd, 2006 by rivercrow
I realized that I was starting to cough the other day. It’s my usual winter cough, so customary that I don’t have any awareness of it.
So what clued me in? The bird was mimicking me.
Gosh she’s good. She has the whole wheezing, hacking winter asthma cough down. She nailed it her first time through our flu season and has developed variations on the theme. Cough, cough, nose-blow, hacking phlegmatic cough, sneeze.
A solo improv of winter sickness.
The bird also knows the fire alarm, the door bell, the dog bark. We have stereo dog whines, stereo dog barks. She gets our attention the way we get the dog’s attention–one quick whistle. Hm–we’re just dogs to her? Perhaps…. But the dog isn’t fooled by the bird at all.
