Yule whores

We went out last night to take photos of Christmas lights. A whole town not far from here unites in a coordinated effort; the whole main drag and all the houses are decorated in white, green, and red lights and other stuff. Some closer communities have beautiful light displays as well–complete with luminaires–so we cruised there too for pics.

My favorite Christmas lights are the big, multicolor retro lights. I like them best when they’re used to outline the edges of the house, but I’m not picky.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to put a single candle in each window. To me at the time, the most realistic color for a candle flame was red.

Mom was horrified. Her youngest daughter wants to put red lights in every window. She refused–the whole neighborhood would ostracise us as a seasonal house of ill-repute, the Yule Whores. I suppose people would mistake seasonal lights placed in the windows of a rural house as an invitation for illicit activities.

When we drive around looking at light displays, I’m constantly watching for other yule whores. I think I’ll start taking pictures of them just for mom–evidence that other people share her view of “good will towards men” and open up their own suburban Christmas red-light districts.

Happy Christmas!

    Glad you enjoyed that, Cafe!

What I didn’t comment on is how my maternal grandmother pronounced “whores” to rhyme with “moors”, with a long “u” sound. So “Yule whores” would alliterate.

I’m not sure why grandma ever had need to say “whores”, either. That’s another story, I think. ;)
