21st century sacrifices
March 15th, 2007 by rivercrow
I was teasing someone who had been out of touch with “giving up email for Lent.” This progressed into a discussion about how people usually “give up” things like chocolate, sweets, etc–turning the practice of sacrifice into a mini-diet.
So…meaningful contemporary things that people can sacrifice?
I see that other people have given up social networking, like visiting MySpace. Is this the 21st century equivalent of going speechless for a time? Internet addiction is certainly a reality, though, so I imagine consciously forgoing Internet sites could be a difficult sacrifice to maintain.
One year I sacrificed self-pity. That was a challenge–but a very worthwhile experience. Have I remained “self-pity-free”? Unfortunately no. But I learned several things about my own dependencies and behavior. I can control the wandering mind if I try, but sometimes the lure of negative self-talk is too tempting.

Negative reinforcement does seem to be quite an addictive mindset. It takes some effort to deny but I reckon I have my mother to thanks for the route out of this one. If you find me annoyed at myself and unwilling to talk about it…odds on that’s what it is.
