Learning from love

The whole world knows this one, but it bears repeating.

Love is patient; love is kind
and envies no one.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
never selfish, not quick to take offense.
There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith,
its hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things
that last forever: faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love.
1 Corinthians 13:4

I lost a friend to another’s jealousy yesterday.

Today I quarreled with a friend and managed to reach a clearer understanding–saved and strengthened the relationship. Emotionally draining, emotionally satisfying.

After we parted, I reflected on how the most meaningful relationships have the most soul-searching arguments. Some of the things we argued about we’ve been dancing around for a while. Taking it head on, fighting it out, and bawling hopelessly because I feared the relationship would end–but we care for each other. He wasn’t letting me off so easily and neither was I.

I’m glad we fought and made up. I try to avoid fighting; it’s undignified and emotional. But sometimes the emotions have to be confronted and acknowledged, which we did today. Some relationships are simply worth fighting for.

I think I’ll close with another quote that fits very well here.

A quarrel between friends, when made up, adds a new tie to friendship.
Saint Francis de Sales

Walk gently.
