Many years ago in the States, unscrupulous dairy farmers added whitewash (think Tom Sawyer) to milk to disguise the fact that the milk had been watered down.

French wine in the 50s and 60s was occasionally laced with antifreeze.

Have a look at China’s fish-farming and the Chinese government’s report on product quality for citizens.

This is the dark side of capitalism and the free market economy–quality and safety sacrificed for the bottom line. Regulations may be painful and expensive to meet, but the temptation of profit and competition can be too great for some to withstand.
